“Words with the Shaman” by David Sylvian. It’s just as pretentious as the title suggests, and yet it’s one of my favorite pieces of music ever. Never released in the US, it’s an all-instrumental, largely improvised EP that melds world music, avant garde jazz, traditional Japanese instruments, funk and random noise together, and it blows my mind every time I hear it. How they ever managed to assemble this in an era before Pro Tools is beyond me. There are some extremely quiet passages, so I’ve accumulated three vinyl copies over the years in search of one that isn’t in poor shape (they all are for some reason). In 1989, I picked up a 3-inch CD (remember those?) of it, which a friend kindly got signed for me a few years later when Sylvian was touring with Robert Fripp.

Side By Side by Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges. I discovered this one in college thanks to my dad and it’s been a go-to ever since. Seen here is an OG from 1957 and a German repressing I bought in Hong Kong in 2012. If my life was a sitcom (and it may be), “Big Shoe” would be the opening credits theme.

Haven’t posted much; it’s hard to do something frivolous like posting records when a lot of people you know are suffering. Life always has some not-so-pretty surprises in store for everyone; as my wise wife once said, “Good things happen slowly over time, but bad things happen in the blink of an eye.” That’s what’s been going on around me.
So after a day of mulling stuff like this, I desperately needed some happy music, and it doesn’t get much happier than The Producers’ self-titled debut. Cheery 1981 power-pop with nothing on its mind beyond soundtracking your middle-school dance. “What’s He Got” and “Certain Kinda Girl” are classics of the genre. I feel awful for my friends but the gloom has lifted for the moment and that is a gift.
Yep, I had two of these—and I ain’t talking albums. Went under the knife yesterday and I’m sore as hell today, but on the way to recovery. Just wish they’d done a little lipo while they were rooting around in there. 😀
Neapolis is one of my favorite Simple Minds albums, but it never got a vinyl release—and wasn’t even released in the US at all! Which means I particularly dig this Italian 12” of the enigmatic first single, “Glitterball,” sporting some very Nineties remixes of their Eighties hits for b-sided. Another Vegas find.

The best Police song Sting never wrote—I mean, close your eyes and that’s Andy, Stewart and Gord laying it down instead of Duran Duran, right? “Serious” is THE great lost Duran single, doomed to languish in obscurity forever, having been the second release from 1990’s tepid “Liberty” album. I picked this UK 12” up over the weekend in Vegas and it still sounds fresh today.
