Oneness Of Juju ‎– Space Jungle Luv (1976)

More Juju funk.  Their second album is more of a squishy soul jazz jam the their debut, along the lines of some of the stuff that was coming out of CTI, Flying Dutchman, Milestone Records and other soul/jazz/funk labels of the 70s.  Fans of Stanley Turrentine or George Benson’s 70s output will dig this.

Oneness Of Juju – African Rhythms (1975)
Now-Again Records (2019 Reissue)

I first heard of Oneness Of Juju in ‘98, from a cd compilation called “

Africafunk: The Original Sound Of 1970s Funky Africa”.  That cd set me on the road to Fela, Lafayette Afro-Rock Band, Mulatu Astatke, Tony Allen…basically everything that sits in the Africa section of the VJ Archive. I took that cd with me everywhere; it was my gateway and the kinda thing I liked to introduce my music buddies to. The opening track was “African Rhythms” by Oneness Of Juju, an immediate hook that immediately had you singing and dancing along.

I’ve been searching for this Oneness Of Juju album every since.
21 years later, here it is.
Thanks, VMP

Lee Morgan ‎– Vol. 3 (1957)

Coffee, Smoke, Jazz
Went record shopping yesterday. 2 dozen new treasures, half of which are jazz. Most of those were Impulse! titles, but I also dug up this excellent Lee Morgan lp, on Blue Note Records.  I haven’t received email notification yet but I’m super hyped for the upcoming VMP Blue Note Anthology, so I guess the pregame starts today. More jazz upcoming, click the link below and listen to Lee Morgan.

Boogarins ‎– Sombrou Duvida (2019)
Vinyl Me, Please Exclusive (Ltd. #164/300 Copies)

Indie-Brasilia moderna! Like a current Os Mutantes for the upcoming Summer Coachellal crowd, but veering on the safer side of the crossroads.  Alt-Pitchfork, but more Sergio Mendes than Sepultura. Music and buy link below, while supplies last. Check it.

NEW RELEASE

Al Green ‎– Let’s Stay Together (1972)
2019, Fat Possum Records (VMP Ltd. Ed. #829/1000)

Coffee, Smoke, Funk. This latest reissue was released in Japan as an Record Store Day title, and VMP had a small batch released which quickly sold out.  My guess is that we should be seeing a “non limited” release in the near future. My copy sounds nice, comparing well to my original Canadian copy.  You’ll notice that the picture on the new album jacket is much sharper and more vibrant as well.  Good pickup.

NEW RELEASE (Reissue)

Loretta Lynn ‎– Coal Miner’s Daughter (1970)
Vinyl Me, Please. Essentials – E076

Coffee, Smoke, Loretta
Despite it’s status as one of the all-time great country/western albums, it’s a first needledrop for this Canuck. I’ve seen the movie and heard the title track, but never heard the album in its entirety before. I have a new favorite country album and am thoroughly enjoying my deeper dig into 60′s/70′s country music. Despite being sung by a straight edge female, every element contained in my favorite outlaw country albums are on full display on “Coal Miner’s Daughter” You know it’s a winner when you spot those musical elements normally associated with Merle, Willie and Waylon’s most badass records.
Happy Humpday, Vinyl Junkies. Listen to some country music.
