Added a few essentials to my Dinosaur Jr. stacks. Much like the Melvins, any project which includes J. Mascis is consistently good. Whether with Dino Jr., Witch or SweetApple, there are no real lulls in the catalog. On the label side of things, I’m grateful that labels like Jagjaguwar exist. They have nailed the art of providing a nice sounding, well pressed and solidly packaged vinyl lp, at a very reasonable price point. From a quality vs. cost perspective, they hit the sweet spot.
Now to work on that Witch catalog…
The Afghan Whigs – Black Love (1996)
(20th Anniversary Remastered 3LP, RSD 2016)
My favorite Sub Pop band wasn’t grunge. MTV made a big push with “Gentlemen”, but it never caught on with the Nirvana/Soundgarden crowd. College bros didn’t play it at keggers, they never sold out arenas.
They’re freaking awesome, still touring and making relevant art today. As far as the remastering goes, I’m currently spinning the MOV reissue from a few years earlier and can’t really hear any improvement in sound. Truth be told, both vinyl copies sound kinda flat but that’s the 90′s for you.
Tool – Undertow (1993)
I first saw Tool perform on the second stage at Lollapalooza, ‘93 or ‘94 if memory serves. I was immediately blow away and bought Underdtow the next day. Then the videos. Then Aenima. Over the course of a few years, they were playing arenas to college bros everywhere. I never saw it coming; I thought Tool seemed way too weird to have that kind of mass appeal.
Clearly, I was wrong Their fanbase is legion and the vinyl is very sought-after, even the bootlegs (and they’re mostly bootlegs).
13 years. New album this August, this time for real.
For now, Undertow. First Tool, for me.
