Klark Kent was the vanity project of Stewart Copeland, the drummer of the Police—which is the kind of shenanigans you can get away with when A) you’re the drummer in a multi-platinum rock band, and B) your brother owns the record company. Copeland put out three singles, all on green vinyl, and an album on 10” vinyl that compiled the singles and added a few other tracks. It’s all quirky pop that’s sort of punk and sort of prog on speed. Adding to the weird vibe is the fact that Copeland played pretty much every instrument himself, which gives it an even more insular feel. Anyway, this was the last one I needed to complete my almost accidental collection of Klark Kent. Whew, I can rest easy now.

So I picked up this odd promo set in Vegas—two square-shaped colored vinyl 7”s for Huey Lewis & The News’ “Hip To Be Square.” They come in a PVC wallet thing, and apparently not only were these sent out as promo records back in the day, but there’s other colors out there as well. I’ve never been a fan of the Fore album, which this is taken from, but this single is probably the most bearable song on it. I’ve caught Huey a few times over the years, including on the Sports tour when they played Pier 84 on the Hudson River in New York City. I remember it blew my mind what showmen they were; unabashed corniness but they clearly enjoyed it – enough so that the crowd made them do three encores, something that hundreds of concerts later, I’ve never seen happen again for any act. It was all downhill from there – never liked “Power of Love” and again, wasn’t much for Fore, but they have my respect – they could really turn it on when they wanted to.

At the NAMM Show a few weeks ago (an annual convention for the musical instrument and pro audio industries), Burl Audio gave away this 180-gram, green vinyl album of tracks recorded using its gear. Pretty sweet for swag.

An Xmas present I’m looking forward to enjoying—The Amazing Paul McCartney, The Incredible Roots and The Unfunniest Man Ever singing “Wonderful Christmastime” on both red and green vinyl.

I shoulda posted this one last Thursday on the 36th anniversary of John Lennon’s passing. It’s no secret that I will take McCartney over Lennon any day, but John had the better Christmas song by far. Plus it’s on green vinyl!
