R. I. P. Neil Innes of The Rutles – the cult Beatles parody collaboration by Monty Python and the original cast of SNL. I saw him perform at a library about eight years ago and he was fantastic. I remember that he closed it out with a bit about the meaning of life, which he ultimately said was “to have fun.” He certainly knew what he was talking about.

Great Moments in Stupid: Found this Squeeze album the other day, signed by Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford for an insulting five bucks. They wrote it was autographed on the price sticker…and then placed the sticker ON AN AUTOGRAPH. Not one to pass up a bargain, I nabbed it and the sticker came off just fine with some gentle pulling.

After David Byrne of Talking Heads signed my Japanese pressing of the Stop Making Sense soundtrack a few weeks ago, I put it in a record frame along with its OBI strip – a paper band that wraps around the record. It looks nice, but I got to wondering what the Japanese characters on the OBI strip actually say, so I used the Google Translate app on my phone to take a look. Pretty neat!

So this happened the other night after I went to see American Utopia on Broadway: David Byrne signed my prized Japanese pressing of Talking Heada’ Stop Making Sense, a top-five all-time favorite if there ever was one.

I added to my Doctor Who 12” remix from the Eighties today as I got Christopher Eccleston to sign it (upper right corner) at NYCC. So now have Doctors 4-12 on here. Hope I can find room for Jodie Whittaker someday.

I don’t have many autographed books, but this seemed appropriate to pull off the shelf today.

One of the best times I had as a college intern at Capitol Records in New York was the day Johnny Clegg was in the office doing media interviews. He was friendly to all, even a below the bottom of the ladder kid like myself, and was one of those people who you feel their presence in the room before you even see them, because he had a such shining positive spirit. Monkey see, monkey do. My kid has started her own small vinyl collection, which includes this new album by AJR—and it’s autographed by them no less. I gave it a spin while she was out; not bad and some of the tunes are real growers.

Legendary producer/musician T-Bone Burnett played a two-song set at a local record shop a few weeks ago, so I took the opportunity to get my trusty copy of the awesome soundtrack he produced for “Inside Llewyn Davis” signed, along with a copy of his new avant-garde song cycle, “The Invisible Light.” This all became fuel for thought about the nature of adopting technology, believe it or not, and wound up being part of my monthly editorial for Pro Sound Network at www.prosoundnetwork.com/pro-sound-news-blog/on-adopting-technology

So these came in the mail the other day—a signed copy of The Velvet Rose, the debut novel by Susan Holmes McKagan, former model and wife of Duff McKagan, who was in two notable bands that if you put their names together, voila! You get the name of her book. Coincidentally (ha), the story is about a model involved with a guy in a world-famous, out of control rock band (they always say, write what you know). I’m looking forward to cracking it open this weekend. As it happens, preorders came with a 45 of two tracks by the book’s fictional band, The Westies, signed by Duff. If I’m being honest, I’m only a casual GnR fan, but I interviewed Duff over 20 years ago for a forgotten side project he did, Neurotic Outsiders, and it was great fun—it basically turned into a good conversation instead of an interview. Nice guy.
