Coffee, Smoke, Monk.  Was at a buddy’s house watching some UFC and started in on a Jaco conversation that got me thinking of these deep-ish jazz stacks that haven’t been fucked with in awhile.  Brilliant Corners is a special kind of excellent, arguably the crowning achievement from a man who helped invent the language of jazz piano by taking it where no one else did.  Monk’s piano is a weird lyrical journey, easy to follow along the path but wonderfully cracked and twisted in ways that challenge the journey without overwhelming it.  This mono Spanish pressing contains an alternate take of “Pannonica” not found on most (any?) other pressings I’ve come across.  Oh, and Paul Chambers on bass, Roach behind the kit.In other words, essential jazz catalog.
I’ll be telling the amazing back story to “Pannonica” during today’s VJ Ep. 46. See you in a few hours
