Here’s New Zealand band Yumi Zouma’s cover of Oasis’ entire (What’s The Story, Morning Glory?) album. Translation of a song into another genre is alway fun, but YZ’s style is whatever you’d call that mellow electronica that you hear in places like Anthropologie. Though occasionally monochromatic, it basically works; on tracks like “She’s Electric” and a few others, they get dangerously close to creating a seriously thumping track and then very consciously veer away, which can be aggravating. Also problematic is their singer, who half-whispers every lyric and hits multiple bad notes on every song, usually at the end of a line. I don’t think it’s intentional, but if it’s being trotted out as “style,” please stop. It’s not as bad as I’m making it sound; I’ll likely listen to it again but there’s a sense of missed opportunities pervading throughout this record.
